A pergola on its own gives very little shade: the slats overhead break up the sun but don't stop it. The products on this page add shade to the top of a pergola. They come in two forms.
Pergola kits with a canopy (8 here) are a complete freestanding frame sold with a fabric canopy that slides open and closed along rails, or with motorized aluminum louvers. You're buying the structure and the shade together, and the size is the size of the frame.
Retractable canopies for an existing pergola (3 here) are fabric systems that mount to a pergola you already have, usually as panels that slide or fold along wires or tracks between the beams. These are sold by panel width, so a large pergola takes several side by side.
For kits, the widths below are the frame's footprint as the seller lists it, from about 10 ft up to 20 ft. If your patio is open on the sides, a pergola canopy shades overhead only. For low sun from the side, pair it with a drop shade on the sunny side; a few of the drop shades we list are sold for mounting inside a pergola opening.
3 of the 11 here publish anything about wind. Outsunny's page for one kit says it is "Not recommended for use in extreme weather conditions such as storms or heavy winds/rain". ShadeFlex says its "Windlock hardware allows the canopies to quickly release in strong winds". The rest say nothing. Each product page quotes the seller's wording exactly, with a link.
For a canopy that attaches to an existing pergola, check the beam size, spacing and material the seller requires. Confirm with the maker or a licensed installer that your pergola can carry it.
